Firebirds Extend Win Streak to 3, Defeats Adelphi University 5-2
QUEENS, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's tennis team defeated Adelphi University 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Alley Pond Tennis Center. The Firebirds improved their record to 8-5 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 9-6.
Claudia Bahamon and Mariona Franco took the first doubles win at No.3, but Adelphi went on to clinch the doubles point after winning at No.1 and 2.
Laura Marie gave the Firebirds the upperhand after defeating her opponent at No.2. The Panthers then evened the score 2-2, after Franco fell at No.2.
Sofia Bellucco battled through three sets, taking the first set 6-1, before falling 2-6 in the second. She came back to clinch her point with a 6-2 win in the tiebreaker.
No stranger to each other, Simoné Pärn and Barbara Quagliardi (former NYT player) have met twice before today's mach up, back in the Fall of 2018. Quagliardi defeated Parn in a three set match up, giving her her only conference loss that season on October 19th. Parn went on to hand Quagliardi her only D2 loss of the season in the ECC semi-fianls, on October 27th after another three set affair. In true fashion, today's match up was pushed to three sets, where Parn fell 4-6 in the first set before bouncing back with a 7-6(2) victory in the second. She won the tiebreaker 6-3 to clinch the winning point for the Firebirds.
Célia Bastin topped it off with a win at No.5, to bring the final score to 5-2 in favor of UDC.
Up Next, UDC (8-5, 3-2 ECC) heads to Delaware on April 5th to face off against Wilmington, in hopes of avenging a 3-4 loss from their last meeting a year ago. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM.
