Firebirds Edged Out in Doubles Point; Proves Lethal as they Fall to the Spartans 3-4

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team fell to St Thomas Aquinas College  3-4, in what turned out to be a nail biter of a match up. The Firebirds fell to 5-2, 3-1 ECC on the season and the Spartans remain undefeated with a 8-0, 5-0 ECC record.

All three doubles matches, were extremely close with the Spartans taking the first match at No.3. The Firebirds then took the win at No.2, with the winner taking all at No.1. After a hard fought battle, the duo of Simoné Pärn and Sofia Bellucco eventually fell 7-6(7) to their opponents, giving STAC the 1-0 lead going into singles play.

The visiting team extended that lead to 2-0, after Parn picked up her first conference loss of the season at No.1. Mariona Franco put the Firebirds on the board with a tough two set match win at No.2. STAC then responded with a win at No.4, before Célia Bastin fought through a three set match to give UDC their second point.

The Spartans sealed the deal after taking the win at the No. 6 position.

UDC (5-2, 3-1 ECC) is back in action tomorrow for the season finale against Queens College in a battle for the No.2 spot in the conference tournament. First serve is slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
