Firebirds Edged Out by Wilmington 4-3 in First Loss of the Season

WASHINGTON, DC- In a battle of the unbeaten, The University of the District of Columbia's women's tennis team saw their 14 game win streak come to an end after falling to Wilmington (Delaware) 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Benning and Stoddart Recreation Center. The Firebirds fell to 14-1 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 11-0.

The ECC AND CACC champions fought to the very end in what was an amazing match-up.

Laura Marie then tied up the game 2-2, after a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Larize Nel. Sofia Bellucco fell at No.3 after a three-set match-up against Jess Purdy, which gave the visitors back the one-point lead.

Mariona Franco came through with the win at No.2 after another tough three-set battle, to tie the game 3-3 and give UDC another fighting chance, with the deciding point coming down to No.6

Valentina Brienza won the first set of a three-set battle 6-4, but her opponent came back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 handing the Rookie of the year her first loss of the season and securing the win for the Wildcats.
