Hadnadova Advances to Round of 16 to Highlight UDC Women’s Tennis ITA East Regional Championship Tournament Appearance

FLUSHING, NY – The six members of the University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team competed individually in the singles tournament and in three pairs for the doubles tournament at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championship Tournament co-hosted by Queens College and Adelphi University at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Senior Dominika Hadnadova, who earned a First Round bye courtesy of her No. 6 seeding, defeated Daemen College's Lorissa Yuen, 7-5, 6-1 in the Round of 32 to advance to the Round of 16. There, she was dealt a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Goldey-Beacom College's Catarina Zheng.

Freshman Anastasiia Danylova earned two victories before she was ousted in the Round of 32 with a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Zheng. She first earned an 8-3 win over LeMoyne College's Tiffany Hamden in the Qualifying Singles Final Round, and then bested Concordia College's Kristel Kalm, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in the Round of 64.

Junior Paula Avellan won both of her qualifying singles matches before falling in the First Round to Queens College's Louissa Brunetti, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. In the Qualifying Singles matches, she beat UScience's Danielle Paran, 8-4 in the 1st Rd., and Daemen College's Tina Stasiuk, 8-4 in the Final.

Likewise, sophomore Estefania Castrillon won both of her qualifying singles matches, but ultimately lost in the First Round to Chestnut Hill College's Mia Covic, 6-1, 6-1. Before she lost, she defeated Bentley's Alexia Petruzziello, 9-8(7), and Molloy College's Amanda Gaimaro, 8-3 in the Qualifying Singles rounds.

Junior Anastasia Khomyachenko and freshman Florence Clercx each bowed out in the Qualifying Singles First Round, respectively.

In the doubles competition, Avellan and Danylova teamed up to defeat Wilmington University's Sabrina Blasi Smith and Laura Gil, 8-5 in First Round. They fell short in a Second Round battle, however, 8-6 to UScience's Karla Miletic and Abby Gamarnik.

Hadnadova and Khomyachenko earned a First Round bye courtesy of a No. 4 seed, but their run was cut short by an 8-5 loss to Merrimack College's Cassie Restrepo and Mia Briggs in the Second Round.

Castrillon and Clercx were defeated in the First Round, 8-1 by the No. 9 seed from Adelphi, Elizabeth Kallenberg and Samantha Perri.

UDC will return to dual match play on Friday, September 29th with a road match vs. East Coast Conference foe Daemen College. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
