Firebirds Fall to Georgetown, 9-0

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was defeated by cross town Division I rival Georgetown University, 9-0 on a hot, Wednesday afternoon at UDC Tennis Courts.

The Firebirds fell to 1-3 overall with the loss while Georgetown, coming off of a 13-6 record a year ago, was victorious in its first dual match of the season to start off 1-0.

Georgetown first claimed all three doubles matches, first winning No. 3 doubles, 8-2, then No. 1 doubles, 8-0, and then No. 2 doubles, 8-3.

The Hoyas clinched the victory with singles wins at No. 3 singles and No. 5 singles as UDC's junior transfer No. 3 singles player Anastasia Khomyachenko was forced to retire in the 2nd set trailing Drew Spinosa, 6-0, 1-0, and Anna Short handed UDC No. 5 singles player Estefania Castrillon a 6-1, 6-1 defeat.

Georgetown went on to sweep the remaining four singles matches to claim the shutout victory.

The Firebirds will next compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championship Tournament in Flushing, NY from Friday, September 22nd – Monday, September 25th.
