UDC Women’s Tennis Suffers 9-0 Loss to Queens in Home Opener

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was defeated, 9-0 by East Coast Conference perennial powerhouse Queens College in its season home opener Friday afternoon at UDC Tennis Courts.

 

The Firebirds (1-2, 1-2 ECC) were defeated, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and 8-3 at No. 2 and 3 doubles, and Queens (4-0, 3-0 ECC) went on to claim all six singles matches as well.

 

The Firebirds' top-three singles players battled to force extended play in their respective matches. Senior captain Dominika Hadnadova won her 2nd set, 6-2, but ultimately fell, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to Reehan Rashad at No. 1. Junior Paula Avellan took opponent Louisa Brunetti to four tiebreak points in the second set before losing, 6-3, 7-6(4) at No. 2, and junior transfer Anastasia Khomyachenko won her first set, 6-2, but ultimately fell to returning 2016 Second Team All-ECC selection Laura Ortega Jover at No. 3, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

 

Next up, UDC will host cross town Division I rival Georgetown University on Wednesday, September 20th at 2 p.m.
