UDC Women’s Tennis Wins Final Three Singles Matches to Beat Chestnut Hill, 5-4

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team earned a come-from-behind, 5-4 victory vs. Chestnut Hill College in East Regional play Monday afternoon at UDC Tennis Courts.

The Firebirds improved to 7-6 overall with today's win while the Griffins, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), fell to 0-14 with the loss.

UDC won two doubles matches and three singles matches to earn its 3rd victory in five matches this spring.

In doubles play, sophomore Paula Avellan and freshman Estefania Castrillon teamed up for an 8-2 No. 2 doubles win over Daniella Siqueira and Nicole Yang. Following that match, junior Dominika Hadnadova and Alena Skobkina completed their 8-4 win over Laure-Anne Josso and Louise Charley at No. 1, and UDC led 2-1 heading into singles play.

The Firebirds would lose the first three completed singles matches at No. 6, 5 and 1, and they were one loss away from defeat with three singles matches remaining.

First, Skobkina came through at No. 2 singles, defeating Charley 7-5, 6-3, and then Avellan followed suit at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Siqueira to force a 4-4 tie.

The match would then be decided by the winner of the No. 4 singles match between two freshmen - Castrillon and Yang. Castrillon cruised to a clutch, 6-0, 6-0 victory to lift the Firebirds to a 5-4 match victory.

UDC will play its final match of the season on Saturday, April 15th as they visit Division I George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
