UDC Women’s Tennis Earns 6-3 Win vs. Virginia Union

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over non-regional foe Virginia Union on a beautiful spring Tuesday afternoon at UDC Tennis Courts.

The Firebirds, who have won two of three matches this spring, improved to 6-5 overall with today's win while the visiting Panthers fell to 3-9.

UDC earned its six points via two doubles wins and four singles wins. Sophomore Paula Avellan's No. 3 singles win vs. Amirah Eckles (6-0, 6-0) cemented the victory for UDC with the decisive 5th point of the match.

Junior Dominika Hadnadova and Alena Skobkina won their 4th straight No. 1 doubles match going back to the fall champion season in October, as the pair cruised past Sabrina Connor and Logan Reid, 8-0. The Firebirds' No. 2 pair, Avellan and Estefania Castrillon also earned a shutout, 8-0 win vs. Eckles and Zsake Crocker.

Later on in singles play, with the score tied, 2-2, Skobkina and Hadnadova won back-to-back matches at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively, and put the Firebirds one win away from clinching the match victory.  UDC freshman Tyra Coombs, playing in her first career collegiate match, bowed out at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Destiny Chapman.

Avellan would put the match away, however, with her straight sets win at No. 3, and Castrillon followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lynda Kaneza at No. 4 to end the day on a high note.

Next up, UDC will travel to Wilmington, DE to take on regional foe and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champion, Goldey-Beacom College tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
