UDC Women’s Tennis Narrowly Defeated by Holy Family

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was defeated, 5-4 vs. Holy Family University in NCAA Division II East Regional action Sunday afternoon at UDC Tennis Courts.

The Firebirds (5-5), playing their 2nd match this spring, won one of three doubles matches and three of six singles matches. Holy Family, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), improved to 7-5 overall.

Junior Dominika Hadnadova and senior Alena Skobkina teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles vs. Anastasiya Kolodiy and Sophie Beck for UDC's lone doubles win of the afternoon.

Skobkina then defeated Beck in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, followed by UDC wins at No. 3 and 4 singles by sophomore Paula Avellan and freshman Estefania Castrillon, respectively. Avellan beat Emerald Adams, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3, and Castrillon bested Christina Little, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.

Senior Danielle Falco, playing in just the 2nd collegiate tennis match of her career, earned a win in one game during the first set vs. opponent Latifah Hinawy. She would ultimately the No. 5 singles match, 6-1, 6-0.

With the score tied, 4-4, the overall match decision came down to the top singles match between Kolodiy and Hadnadova. Kolodiy won the first set, 6-2, but Hadnadova came back to win the 2nd set, 6-3. The 3rd set would need four tiebreakers before Kolodiy could be declared a winner, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4), and Holy Family escaped with the 5-4 victory.
