Hadnadova and Skobkina Advancing to Doubles Quarterfinals Highlights UDC’s ITA East Regional Tournament Appearance

EAST MEADOW, NY – The No. 6 regionally-seeded University of the District of Columbia doubles team of Dominika Hadnadova and Alena Skobkina advanced to the quarterfinals, highlighting the Firebirds' appearance last weekend at the ITA East Regional Tournament hosted by NYIT.

Hadnadova and Skobkina defeated a doubles pair from USciences, 8-5 in the round of 32, and then outlasted a team from Assumption College, 9-7 in the round of 16. Their run would ultimatley come to an end in the quarterfinals as they fell to the No. 3 seeded team from NYIT, Lena Dimmer and Melanie Benyadi, 8-4.

In singles play, Hadnadova earned a bye in the Round of 64 as the No. 14 seed, and in her first match, defeated Maria Monje of Assumption, 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 32. She ran into the No. 1 overall seed from NYIT, Lena Dimmer, in the Round of 16, however, and was defeated 6-3, 6-4.

UDC's Paula Avellan also impressed with three singles victories in a single day, Saturday, to reach the Round of 32.  She first defeated Molloy's Samantha Bloecker, 8-1 in the first round of qualifying matches, then knocked off USciences' Abbygail Gamarnik, 8-3 in the second round, and finally pulled off a 6-3, 6-2 victory over NYIT's Antonella Alcerro in the Round of 64. Sunday, her run was halted in the Round of 32 by the No. 10 seeded Laura Ortega Jover of Queens College, 6-0, 6-2.

The Firebirds will return to action with an ECC match on the road at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, October 14th.
