Firebirds Fall 5-4 to Goldey-Beacom in Season Home Finale

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was defeated by Goldey-Beacom College, 5-4 on a beautiful Thursday afternoon in the nation's capital.

Sophomore Dominika Hadnadova won her No. 1 singles match and teamed with junior Alena Skobkina for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, and UDC earned forfeit wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to an insufficient Lightning lineup. UDC led 3-1 at the start of singles play, but Goldey-Beacom came storming back to win four of the five singles matches played and claimed the victory.

The Lightning earned three straight victories at No. 3, 4, and 5, and led 4-3 in the overall match count with only two matches remaining. Hadnadova kept the Firebirds alive as she defeated Francesca Beg, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to tie the match, 4-4.

Skobkina battled for a first set win, 7-6(1), but her opponent, Amina Mrad, fought her way back to earn a 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-1 three-set triumph at No. 2 singles, earning Goldey-Beacom its decisive 5th match point for the win.

The Firebirds play their 2015-16 season finale on the road at Bowie State on Sunday, April 17th.
