UDC Women’s Tennis Defeated by Howard, 7-2

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was defeated by Division I cross town foe, Howard University, 7-2 on a cold and breezy Wednesday afternoon in the nation's capital.

The Firebirds (5-8) won matches at No. 5 and 6 singles, but lost singles matches one through four and were swept in the three doubles matches. Howard improved to 8-5 with today's win.

The Bison won the first two completed singles matches to clinch the match victory after they had swept doubles play. First, at No. 2 singles, Nicole Hutchison defeated Alena Skobkina, 6-3, 6-3, and Kindha Nasef followed with a 6-0, 7-6(9) win over Peerada Looareesuwan at No. 3.

Sophomore Laura Dimante picked up the Firebirds' first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Christina Joynes, but UDC was on the losing side of two very close matches that followed at No. 1 and No. 4. First, Dominika Hadnadova was outlasted in three sets at No. 1 singles by Jessica Josiah, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, and then Sajela Harlow needed tiebreakers in both sets to beat Zoe Mall at No. 4, 7-6(5), 7-6(3).

Senior Laura Rojas ended the day on a positive note as she held on to defeat Margie Funches, 8-6 in the finale match of the day at No. 6.

The Firebirds are back in action on Thursday, April 14th when they host Goldey-Beacom College at 2 p.m.
