Andersson, Duijst Earn ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Awards

SKILLMAN, NJ – University of the District of Columbia senior student-athletes Simon Andersson and Maxime Duijst were both honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with the Division II East Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Awards.

The award, which dates back to 1982, goes to men and women student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

"These awards are extremely well-deserved for Simon and Maxime," Head Coach Dickie Mahaffey said. "This is a very fitting honor for each of these two to culminate outstanding four-year student-athlete careers at the University of the District of Columbia."

Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) was the lone senior this year on a UDC team with five freshmen, and he led the team to its 4th straight appearance in the ECC Championship Tournament and 3rd NCAA Tournament berth in the last four years. He was named First Team All-East Coast Conference, Team Most Valuable Player and was the recipient of the Team Coach's Award.

Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) was a three-time All-East Coast Conference performer and led the team to four consecutive ECC Championship Tournament appearances. Her freshman season, she helped the team capture the school's first ever ECC Championship and reach the NCAA Division II Round of 16. This year, she took home both Team MVP and Coach's Award honors.

Both Andersson and Duijst participated in the 38th Annual UDC Commencement on Saturday, May 9th at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
