Shorthanded Firebirds Lose Close Match at Holy Family, 5-4

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Despite having to forfeit matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, the University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was still just one match away from victory, but the Firebirds fell short in a 5-4 loss to East region foe Holy Family Monday afternoon.

UDC (7-10) won the No. 2 doubles match as senior Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Shorter University) and junior Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Valdosta State) teamed up for an 8-3 win. The Firebirds lost a close No. 1 doubles match, 8-6, however, and trailed 3-1 heading into singles play.

Junior Laura Rojas (Civil Engineering – Bogota, Columbia/Jackson State) and Gallard evened the match score at 3-all as they both won their No. 5 and 4 singles matches in succession. Freshman Laura Dimante (Business Management – Riga, Latvia/Rigas Teikas) was on her way to victory with a 6-2 first set victory, but wound up falling to Alina Nerseyan, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.

The Firebirds would then tie the score once more at 4 as Looareesuwan earned another impressive singles victory, 6-3, 6-4 over HFU's Emerald Adams. With the match being decided by the No. 1 singles match, senior Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) was out-lasted by Anastasia Kolodiy, 7-5, 6-3.

Next up, UDC will host Concordia on Sunday, April 12th at 12 p.m.
