No. 3 Seeded Firebirds Ousted in ECC Semifinals by No. 2 Queens, 5-0

FLUSHING, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team forfeited two matches due to an insufficient lineup and lost the first three results to come in as the No. 3 seeded Firebirds were shut out, 5-0 by tournament host and No. 2 seeded Queens.

This completes the fall championship portion of the UDC women's tennis schedule with the Firebirds earning a record of 7-4 overall. Queens advances to tomorrow's ECC Finals to take on the two-time defending ECC champion, NYIT.

Trailing 2-0 before match play began due to forfeits at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, UDC fell behind 4-0 upon losing the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles matches, respectively. At No. 2 doubles, First Team All-ECC selection Yevgeniya Plevako teamed up with Second Team All-ECC's Andrea Samson for an 8-3 win over UDC's Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Shorter University) and First Team All-ECC selection Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Valdosta State). Next, a pair of Queens Second Team All-ECC selections, Angelika Sobiecka and Cami Abdallah edged out senior captain Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) and ECC Rookie of the Year, Laura Dimante, 8-6.

With Queens needing just one singles win to complete the match victory, Samson defeated freshman Laura Rojas, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

The Firebirds will resume play in the spring, beginning with a match on March 4th vs. Howard.
