UDC Downs Daemen, 7-2 in ECC Home Match

WASHINGTON, DC – The Firebirds cruised to a 7-2 victory over East Coast Conference foe Daemen, 7-2 at UDC Tennis Courts on a cloudy, Friday afternoon in the nation's capital.

UDC (5-3, 4-2 ECC) won both doubles matches and all five singles matches played while forfeiting matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to an insufficient lineup. Daemen fell to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the ECC with the loss.

Beginning the match down 2-0, junior Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Valdosta State) and senior Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Shorter University) teamed up for a dominant, 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, and senior captain Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) and freshman Laura Dimante (Business Management – Riga, Latvia/Rigas Teikas) followed with an impressive, 8-1 No. 1 doubles victory to tie the match.

The Firebirds proceeded to win five consecutive singles matches to close out the match in convincing fashion. The first three matches in were straight sets victories by Looareesuwan over Gretchen Ringler at No. 2, Gallard at No. 5 over Sarah Rohe and Rojas over Tianna Washington at No. 4.

With the match victory already clinched, Dimante and Duijst each posted wins at No. 3 and No. 1, respectively to close out the match. Dimante defeated Sarah Crissy, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and Duijst beat Hayle Scanlan, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1.

The Firebirds return to play tomorrow as they host another ECC foe, Roberts Wesleyan. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
