Firebirds Soar Past Molloy, 7-2

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team improved to 4-1 as the Firebirds defeated East Coast Conference foe Molloy, 7-2 on Friday afternoon.

UDC won its first and second doubles matches as well as the first five singles matches, and it forfeited matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to an insufficient lineup.

Head coach Dickie Mahaffey changed up his lineup a bit to allow senior Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Shorter University) to partner with junior Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Valdosta State) at No. 2 doubles. The first-time pair managed to earn a convincing, 8-1 victory.  Also, senior Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) teamed with freshman Laura Dimante for the first time and they earned an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles as well.

With the match tied 2-2 after UDC's two forfeits, the Firebirds rattled off five consecutive singles wins. Junior Laura Rojas (Civil Engineering – Bogota, Colombia/Jackson State), Looareesuwan, Dimante, and Gallard, respectively, each won their singles match in straight sets. Duijst was locked in to a battle at No. 1 singles vs. Tatiana Rajaona before coming out victorious, 7-6(4), 6-2.

The Firebirds will visit ECC foe Queens tomorrow at 11 a.m.
