UDC Women’s Tennis Snaps Losing Streak With Resounding, 8-1 Home Victory vs. Holy Family

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team snapped its five match losing streak with a resounding, 8-1 home victory over non-conference foe Holy Family on a hot Sunday afternoon in the nation's capital.

The Firebirds won two of three doubles matches and swept all six singles matches to improve to 8-7 overall this season. Holy Family concluded its season with today's match, finishing 5-7 overall.

In doubles play, senior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensianado Universitario) and junior Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Shorter University) teamed up for an 8-1 victory over Jacqueline Clyne and Casey Borish at the 3rd flight to get the Firebirds off on the right foot. Junior Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) and sophomore Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Valdosta State University) followed with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Senior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) and freshman Tamara Kenia (Studio Art – Donetsk, Ukraine/Academy of Art University) could not complete the doubles sweep, losing a hard-fought match to Emerald Adams and Anastasiya Kolodiy, 8-6.

Both Nunez and Kenia both bounced back nicely in singles play with victories at No. 1 and 2, respectively. Duijst won her No. 3 match, 6-2, 7-5 over Adams, Looareesuwan defeated Maja Pantelic, 6-1, 7-6, Leon bested Steicy Castro, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5, and Gallard handed Borish a 6-0, 6-0 loss at No. 6.

The Firebirds will conclude the regular season with a road match at Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, April 15th at 1 p.m.
