Nunez, Leon Both Win on Senior Day; Firebirds Fall 6-3 vs. Goldey-Beacom

WASHINGTON, DC – Both University of the District of Columbia women's tennis seniors Sofia Leon and Jessica Nunez earned singles victories as the Firebirds celebrated Senior Day on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the nation's capital; however, UDC was defeated by Goldey-Beacom, 6-3.

In a match pitting two of the top teams in the East Region against each other for the first ever meeting between these two schools in a duel meet, the No. 5 ranked Lightning got the best of No. 6 UDC thanks to a sweep in doubles play and singles victories at the No. 2, 3, and 4 spots.

Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) earned an impressive No. 5 singles win over Nina Sengl, 6-3, 6-3 to put UDC on the board at 3-1. Goldey-Beacom would then clinch the match with back-to-back singles wins at No. 2 and No. 3.

Still, Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) followed in Leon's footsteps by making her Senior Day one to remember with a thrilling, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Stephanie Puentes Robinson at No. 1 singles. Nunez, No. 9 in the ITA East Region Singles rankings, had lost to Puentes Robinson when these two last met during the ITA East Region Championship Quarterfinals in September 2012, but Nunez avenged that loss and beat the No. 8 ranked Puentes Robinson.

Following Nunez's win, Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Valdosta State University) lost a very competitive No. 4 singles match vs. Filipa Correia, 6-3, 7-6, 10-3. Finishing off the day though, was UDC junior Alicia Gallard with a 6-4, 7-5, 10-8 victory at No. 6 singles over Anastasia Melnikova.

The Firebirds have a week off before they host Holy Family in the home regular season finale on Sunday, April 13th at 12 p.m.
