District of Columbia Defeated by Concordia in East Region Contest

BRONXVILLE, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team visited Concordia College for an East Region matchup on Sunday, March 16th at the Meyers Tennis Center. Junior Maxime Duijst and sophomore Peerada Looareesuwan teamed up in doubles for the only Firebirds victory of the afternoon as UDC was defeated, 8-1.

The match began with doubles play as Concordia's Costanza Mecchi and Romana Tabak earned an 8-2 victory over freshman Tamara Kenia (Studio Art – Donetsk, Ukraine/Academy of Art University) and senior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil). The Clippers' No. 3 duo of Valeriia Cheban and Alla Kravchuk would follow shortly thereafter with a hard-fought, 8-5 victory in a very competitive match vs. senior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) and junior Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Shorter University).

The Firebirds would secure one doubles victory in the No. 2 match though, as Looareesuwan (Computer Science - Bangkok, Thailand/Valdosta State University) and Duijst (Biology - Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint Joris) pulled out an impressive 8-6 win over Linda Eliasson and Stefanie Canals-Baker. The Clippers would take a 2-1 overall match lead into singles play.

The Clippers went on to sweep singles play, though not without a battle at the No. 1 match by Nunez in her match vs. Tabak. Nunez won the first set, but Tabak came from behind to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in what proved to be the match-clinching win.

UDC fell to 7-5 overall with the loss while Concordia, ranked No. 39 in Division II, improved to 10-1. Next, the Firebirds will visit Division I Georgetown on Tuesday, March 18th.
