Men's and Women's Tennis Partner With Food & Friends

On February 21st the University of the District of Columbia men's and women's tennis teams partnered with Food & Friends for a day of service in the community.

The mission of Food & Friends is to foster a community caring for men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses by preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries in conjunction with nutrition counseling. The organization operates six days a week, 52 weeks a year and serves over 2,900 clients in a service area that spans 5,346 miles. Over 3,000 meals are prepared and packaged daily. The Firebirds joined Food & Friends in their kitchen in NE Washington, D.C. and had a blast working together to help get meals out the door.

"Our time with Food & Friends was a great team-building exercise, and it was rewarding experience to help out in the community," said head coach Dickie Mahaffey. "It was a nice change-of-pace from practice and the weight room."

The Firebirds will again serve in the community when they continue their partnership with Hands On DC, which started last year. They will participate in the March Mural Madness project on Saturday, March 8th.
