Women’s Tennis Sweeps Daemen in Final Regular Season Match

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches for a resounding, 9-0 win over East Coast Conference newcomer, Daemen on Wednesday morning in both teams' regular season finale.

The Firebirds, who have earned a No. 3 seed in this weekend's ECC Championship Tournament, finish the regular season with a record of 7-2 overall and 6-2 in league play. They will play No. 2 seed and tournament host, Queens on Friday afternoon. Daemen ended the season with a 5-11 overall mark and a 1-7 league record in its first year as a member of the ECC.

All three UDC doubles teams were dominant as they each earned shutout wins, 8-0. The No. 1 team of senior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) and freshman Tamara Kenia (Graphic Design – Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk Lyceum College) improved to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the ECC. Junior Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) and sophomore Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Demonstration School of Ramkhamhaeng University) are 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the league, and the No. 3 team of senior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitrio) and junior Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Joachim Du Bellay) finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 5-2 vs. the ECC.

In singles play, Nunez defeated Hayle Scanlan, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot to improve to 9-3 (6-2 ECC). Kenia handed Shaylah Iverson a 6-3, 6-1 loss at No. 2 and finished her regular season 8-3 (6-2 ECC). Duijst bounced back from just her second ECC loss of the season by beating Brianna Fiorita in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. She is 7-3 (6-2 ECC) on the season at the No. 3 spot.

Looareesuwan earned her team-leading 12th singles win of the season, 6-0, 6-1 over Aman Shamaa at the No. 4 spot. She is 12-3 overall (6-2 ECC). Leon improved to 6-4 (4-3 ECC) and Gallard improved to 7-2 (5-2 ECC) as they both earned victories in straight sets at No. 5 and 6, respectively.

The Firebirds are a combined 35-13 vs. the ECC in singles play and 16-6 vs. the ECC in doubles play. They will look to upset Queens and return to the ECC Championships for the first time since 2011.
