Firebirds Women’s Tennis Completes Third Straight Shutout Victory; Improves to 3-0

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team continues to roll as the Firebirds stormed past non-conference foe Shepherd, 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon for their third straight shutout victory to start the season.

UDC (3-0) swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in dominating fashion in what was the Firebirds' final tune-up before the ITA East Regional this weekend. With one more shutout victory in their next match at NYIT (September 27th), the Firebirds can tie a school record of four consecutive shutout wins set in 2011.

Junior Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) and sophomore Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science - Bangkok, Thailand/Demonstration School of Ramkhamhaeng University) were unblemished in both their No. 2 doubles win (8-0) and each of their singles wins (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 3 and 4 spots, respectively.

Reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) continues to impress as she teamed with freshman Tamara Kenia (Graphic Design – Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk Lyceum College) for an 8-6 No. 1 doubles win and defeated Shepherd's Katelyn Murnaw, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot. Kenia also remained unbeaten at the No. 2 singles spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jana Jones.

Senior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) and junior newcomer Alicia Gallard (Business Management – Blaison-Gohier, France/Joachim Du Bellay) also teamed up for a No. 3 doubles win, 8-2, over Emily Johnson and Chloe Raines. Leon handed Johnson a 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 5 singles and Gallard cruised past Raines, 6-0, 6-0 to complete the singles and match sweep.
