Firebirds Sweep St. Thomas Aquinas in Season-Opener

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team dominated all three doubles matches and all six singles matches en-route to a 9-0 season-opening win over East Coast Conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday afternoon.

This marks the second year in a row that UDC has won its season opener; meanwhile, STAC fell to 1-2 with today's loss.

The No. 2 doubles team of junior Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris and sophomore newcomer Peerada Looareesuwan (Computer Science – Bangkok, Thailand/Demonstration School) picked up the first point of the day with an 8-0 win. The Firebirds' No.1  pair, senior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecaudor/American School of Guayaquil) and freshman newcomer Tamara Kenia (Graphic Design – Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk Lyceum College), followed with an 8-2 victory, and senior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) and junior Alicia Gallard teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Looareesuwan and Kenia earned convincing victories at No. 4 and 2, respectively, to seal the match victory. Still, the Firebirds went on to earn victories at No. 1 , 3, 6 and 5 to complete the shutout win.

Next up, the Firebirds host another ECC opponent in Dowling College, tomorrow at 12 p.m.
