District of Columbia Claims Another Home Win 7-0 Against LIU Post
WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team claimed a 7-0 victory against ECC opponent LIU Post to remain perfect at home (4-0) on the season and extend their home winning streak to 13 matches. With the win, the Firebirds improved to 8-3 on the season and 5-3 in conference play to finish out the 2012 year.
The Firebirds began the day with back to back convincing doubles wins against the Pioneers. Junior Kristyna Nepivodova (Economics – Breznice, Czech Republic/Gymnasium pod Svatou Horou) and sophomore Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) grabbed a win against LIU Post pair Lejla Heco and Catherine Avelar 8-0 while junior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) and senior Tadai Abilla (TV Production – Galloway, NJ/Absegami HS) teamed up to defeat Jovana Djurdjevic and Amanda Gaimaro 8-1.
Singles play was started with a win by forfeit for the Firebirds due to an insufficient lineup by the Pioneers. Leon claimed the second singles victory and the overall match victory by defeating Djurdjevic 6-1, 6-0. Junior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) eased past Heco 6-0, 6-0 in what was her only match of the day. In the No. 2 doubles match, Nepivodova won 6-0, 6-0 against opponent Avelar. The overall match against LIU Post was capped off with a third 6-0, 6-0 singles victory for the Firebirds recorded by Duijst in the No. 3 singles match over Gaimaro.
District of Columbia will be back in action at home in 2013 against Chestnut Hill College on Sunday, March 24.
