Firebirds Women's Tennis Soars Past Chowan, 7-2

MURFREESBORO, NC - The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team soared past non-conference opponent, Chowan University, 7-2 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Firebirds (7-3) earned victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles and then claimed five of the six singles matches. The only two points surrendered to Chowan were due to insufficient lineup at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, the Firebirds' No. 1 pair, senior Kristyna Nepivodova (Economics – Breznice, Czech Republic/Gymnasium pod Svatou Horou) and sophomore Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) improved to 6-3 this season as they defeated Natalie Kamenschchikova and Breanne Johnson, 8-2. Junior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) and junior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) also improved to 6-3 at No. 2 doubles with a solid, 8-3 decision as well. The Firebirds, who forfeited the No. 3 doubles match due to an insufficient line-up, headed into singles play with a 2-1 advantage.

After a forfeit at No. 6 singles evened the match at 2-2, the Firebirds went on to sweep the top-five singles matches. Senior Tadai Abilla (TV Production – Galloway, NJ/Absegami HS) picked up the first of those five wins with a commanding, 6-0, 6-0 win over Brittany Moser at No. 5 singles. Next was Nepivodova coming back to hand Chowan's Johnson a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 defeat at No. 2 singles for her seventh victory of the season. Duijst followed with an impressive, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jessica DeBackre at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Nunez had to battle, but the third-year First Team All-East Coast Conference selection came out on top to defeat Kamenschchikova, 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 for her team-leading ninth singles win of the season. Leon finished off the day with a shutout, 6-0, 6-0 win over Straffai Cleveland at the No. 4 spot.

The Firebirds host ECC foe LIU Post tomorrow at 12 p.m. for their final home match of the fall season.
