Firebirds Women's Tennis Surges Past Dowling, 6-1

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over East Coast Conference foe Dowling on Wednesday afternoon at UDC Tennis Courts. The Firebirds improved to 5-2 (3-2 ECC) on the season and extended their home win-streak to 12 matches.

Both teams played with a line-up of just five players, and so the sixth singles match and third doubles match were discarded. District of Columbia claimed wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles and in singles matches 2-through-5.

In doubles play, juniors Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering - Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) and Sofia Leon (Psychology - Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) cruised to an 8-1 win at second doubles for the first point of the match. Later, senior Kristyna Nepivodova (Economics - Breznice, Czech Republic/Gymnasium pod Svatou Horou) and sophomore Maxime Duijst (Biology - Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) outlasted Dowling's Kauana Gonclaves and  Robyn Romanoff for an 8-5 victory at first doubles. The Firebirds took a 2-0 lead heading into singles play.

Senior Tadai Abilla (TV Production - Galloway, NJ/Absegami HS) was the first Firebird to finish off a singles victory, easing past Arielle Miller in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at 5th singles. Leon then completed a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, followed by two consecutive straight-set victories by Nepivovdova and Duijst. Romanoff would pick up the Golden Lions' only win of the day in the final singles match, as she bested Nunez, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.

The Firebirds are back in action at ECC foe Molloy on Friday, September 28th at 3:30 p.m.
