Queens Downs District of Columbia Women's Tennis, 6-3

FLUSHING, NY - The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team suffered its second loss of the season and second conference loss at the hands of Queens College on Sunday afternoon.  The Knights defeated the Firebirds 6-3, with the help of two forfeit wins.

"While we came up a little short, the team played very well against an extremely tough opponent," head coach Dickie Mahaffey said after the match.  "It's great to see Sofy and Maxime both make comebacks to secure hard-fought wins in singles."

The Firebirds had an insufficient lineup that forced the team to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match.  Junior Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) and junior Sofia Leon (Psychology – Quito, Ecuador/Pensionado Universitario) lost 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.  Junior Kristyna Nepivodova (Economics – Breznice, Czech Republic/Gymnasium pod Svatou Horou) and sophomore Maxime Duijst (Biology – Valkenswaard, Netherlands/Pleincollege Sint-Joris) finished out doubles play with an 8-5 loss.

After forfeiting the No. 6 singles match due to an insufficient Firebirds lineup, senior Tadai Abilla (TV Production – Galloway, NJ/Absegami HS) lost to Rodionova by a score of 6-2, 6-1 in a match that clinched the win for the Knights.

The Firebirds received their first win of the day as Nunez, the ECC Preseason Player of the Year, defeated Goldsmith, 6-3, 7-5.  Nepivodova was defeated by Fanchin 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match.  The Firebirds finished the match with a pair of come-from-behind wins by Leon (5-7, 7-5, 10-8 over Fridman) and Duijst (4-6, 6-4, 10-6 over Samson).

District of Columbia will be back in action on Tuesday, September 18th at 3:00 p.m. as it hosts St. Mary's (Md.).
