Bears Blank Firebirds in ECC Tennis Championship Rematch

PORT WASHINGTON, NY - The defending East Coast Conference champion University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team suffered its first conference loss in almost a full calendar year on Saturday afternoon against New York Institute of Technology. The Bears blanked the Firebirds, 9-0 thanks in part to two forfeit wins.

District of Columbia (1-1), playing on the road again just one day after a grueling, 5-4 victory at Roberts Wesleyan, had an insufficient lineup which forced the Firebirds to forfeit matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

NYIT swept the rest of match play - including Nelly Ciolkowski's 6-1, 6-2 win over ECC Pre-season Player of the Year, Jessica Nunez (Junior - Electrical Engineering - Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil). Nunez was undefeated (6-0) against ECC competition in 2011-12.
