University of the District of Columbia Soars to Victory Over West Chester University, 9-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team came back from its loss to Division I Georgetown University with a shutout win against West Chester University, 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at the UDC Tennis Courts.

The District of Columbia (12-3) swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches, earning its second victory of the spring season. West Chester, of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, fell to 4-6 on the season with the loss.

In doubles play, Jessica Nunez (Guayaquil, Ecuador - American School of Guayaquil) teamed up with Maria Vitkina (Ekaterinburg, Russia - Linguistic Gymnasium 13) to defeat Brittany Counts and Becca Thiel 8-0. Kristyna Nepivodova (Breznice, Czech Republic - Gymnasium pod Svatou Horou) and Maxime Duijst (Valkenswaard, Netherlands - Pleincollege Sint-Joris) combined to win their match 8-1. Rounding out the doubles competition, Sofia Leon and Ty Abilla (Galloway, NJ - Absegami HS) won 8-1.

 The women's team showed no resistance in singles play, with Nunez leading the way by winning her match 6-4, 6-2. Nepivodova cruised to victory by winning 6-0 in both sets. Vitkina played an intense match, defeating her opponent in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(2).  Duijst had an impressive showing by sweeping both sets 6-0. Leon and Abilla also each won their singles matches, 6-1, 6-0 to finish off the competition. Abilla showed no rust as she returned to the tennis court for her first spring match of the season after playing basketball for the UDC women's team this winter.

The Firebirds, ranked No. 41 nationally and No. 3 in the region, improved to 12-3 overall on the season.

UDC will return to action on Friday, March 23rd, at No. 27 Concordia College (NY) at 1:00 p.m.
