UDC Tennis Goes 2-0 on Tuesday Against Mt. Saint Mary’s
Washington, DC—The Men's and Women's Tennis Teams both picked up wins today against Mount Saint Mary's University at the UDC Tennis Facility in Washington, DC. The Firebirds men's team won by a score of 8-1, while the women won a hard fought battle to come out on top 5-4.
On the men's side, the Firebirds went undefeated in doubles competition. Sophomore Miguel Uzcategui and Sophomore Carlos Quiroga defeated Mike Zabetakis and Patrick McGinley 8-4. Another win came when Sophomore Aleksandar Grabovac and Freshman Simon Andersson defeated Matt Blake and Taylor Place 8-3. In singles competition, Junior Tomas Gajdusek defeated Adam Salam 6-3, 6-3 and Junior Bruno Reich won the battle against Mike Salomon 6-2, 6-2.
The women's team held on to earn a great victory as well against Mt. St. Mary's. The team was led by Junior Kristyna Nepivodova who went 2-0 for the day. She won her doubles match alongside Freshman Maxime Duijst, 8-2, against Carly Landini and Renee Deane, and she also beat Kelly Conroy 6-4, 6-1 in singles play. Sophomore Jessica Nunez came out on top in a tough match-up against Samantha Pinchoff 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. Senior Maria Vitkina also won her singles match against Carly Landini by a score of 6-4, 7-6(2).
Head Tennis Coach T. Richard Mahaffey was very proud of both of his team's performances, after going 4-0 this week.
The Firebirds return to the courts this weekend on Saturday when they travel to compete in the ITA East Regional in Philadelphia, PA.
