Jessica Nunez and Tadai Abilla Receive Top Women’s Tennis Team Awards
April 10, 2011- Washington, DC- University of the District of Columbia Head Men's & Women's Tennis Coach T. Richard Mahaffey, III selected freshman Jessica Nunez (Electrical Engineering-Guayaquil, Ecuador) and sophomore Tadai Abilla (Television Production-Galloway, NJ) as the recipients of this year's Women's Tennis Team top awards. The MVP Award was presented to Nunez, while Abilla received the Coaches Award. The Awards were presented at the University of the District of Columbia Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Annual Awards Banquet, in April, at Maggiano's in northwest Washington.
In making the presentation to Nunez, Coach Mahaffey described her as "a fierce competitor and leader on the court. She proved herself to be one of the top players in the NCAA Division II East Region." Nunez finished the year with a 12-3 overall singles record and a 12-4 overall doubles record. Another accolade that Nunez picked up this year was being named to the 1st Team of the East Coast Conference.
Coach Mahaffey described Tadai Abilla as "having a hard working, never quit attitude with leadership qualities." Abilla finished the year with a 7-7 overall singles record and 3-10 overall in doubles competition.
