Lopez Nets Five in Firebirds Loss Against Bridgeport

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's lacrosse team fell to conference foe Bridgeport, Friday afternoon at the UDC grass field. Lauryn Lopez led the Firebirds with six points on five goals and an assist. She also had a game-high 11 groundballs. UDC fell to 0-9, 0-3 ECC while the Purple Knights improved to 7-3, 1-2 in the league.

Anna Schamens posted two goals, two assists, 12 draw controls, and three caused turnovers and Goalkeeper Zuleima Ulloa-Santos had a game-high 14 saves.

Despite the first two goals of the game coming from the visitors, the home team struck back with Michelle Mitchell scoring the first goal for the Firebirds in the first quarter. UDC took their momentum into the second quarter outscoring the Purple Knights 6-5, with Lopez and Schamens accounting for five of those goals and Joi Scruggs adding to the mix with an unassisted goal. Bridgeport took a one-point lead going into the half, with UDC hopeful.

But it was a tale of two halves as a depleted bench saw UDC struggle to make it on the board in the second half. The visitors went on a 12-1 run blanking the Firebirds in the final quarter.

UDC (0-9, 0-3 ECC) will head to N.Y. next Saturday to continue conference play in a match-up against St Thomas Aquinas College. The game will be live-streamed on the ECC network and is slated to go off at 3:30 pm.
