Firebirds Fall to Roberts Wesleyan in ECC Opener

ROCHESTER, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team lost its first East Coast Conference game on Sunday with an 18-2 defeat to Roberts Wesleyan.

"We had a steep mountain to climb today with 3 teammates unable to play," Head Coach Cassandra Haase said. "However, with the selflessness of our two goalies who volunteered to each play as a field player for a half we only had to play down 1 player. The leadership those two took was admirable and we pushed ourselves out of our comfort zone."

The Firebirds (1-3, 0-1 ECC) took a total of nine shots as a team and managed to score two of those shots. With a total of 14 ground balls, seven saves, and eight draw controls. Sophomore Kianna Franklin led the team with two goals off seven shots and had five draw controls on the day.

With the Firebirds needing the versatility of the goalkeepers today sophomore pair Jada Foy and Melan White shared each half playing outfield. While in goal, Foy made five saves off 19 shots, and White made two saves off six shots.

Roberts Wesleyan (5-2, 1-1 ECC) took a total of 34 shots with 25 on goal. The Redhawks also had 31 ground balls, 14 draw controls, and had 10 fewer turnovers (23-13) than UDC. They took a perfect 8-of-8 on clear attempts.

Next, UDC will host Molloy College in their 1st home ECC game of the season at UDC Sports Complex, Saturday, March 17th at 2:30PM.
