Firebirds lose to Division 1 Howard

The Firebirds (1-2,0-0 ECC) took on the division 1 Bison's at William H Greene stadium. This is the first in season matchup between the two HBCU lacrosse programs. The Bison's started off the match with three goals, but the firebirds answered back shortly with freshman midfielder Shemara Jefferson scoring a free position shot to put the firebirds on the board 3-1. At the end of the half the Bison's controlled the game 7-2. The firebirds came back in the second half with Junior Vanessa Valentine scoring the first goal keeping the firebirds in the fight. For the most of the second half the Bison's controlled possession of the ball ending the game 17-7.

The offensive leaders for the game were freshman midfielder Shemara Jefferson, junior midfielder Vanessa Valentine and junior midfielder Amy Rock all with 2 goals and sophomore Kianna Franklin with one goal and one assist.

Defensively Freshman Rebekah Clements had three groundballs, freshman defender Jade Martinez had two groundballs and one caused turnover, in goal sophomore Jada foy had 10 saves on 17 shots and sophomore goalkeeper Melan White had 8 saves on 18 shots, together both goalies saved 18 out 35 seen.

The Bison's offensive leaders were senior midfielder Natia Warren with 8 goals and one assist, senior midfielder Ashley Duncan with five goals and one assist and freshman midfielder Lailah Robey with one goal and three assists.

 

Next the Firebirds will take on the Roberts Wesleyan Red Hawks on Sunday March 11th in Rochester, NY.
