Firebirds Wilt in Second Half, Fall 15-5 vs. Queens

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team was defeated, 15-5 by Queens College in East Coast Conference play Friday night at Georgetown University's Cooper Field.

Senior midfielder Amber Walls scored three of her career-high tying four goals within the first 33 minutes of action, and had UDC within two, down 6-4 early in the second half. The Knights, however, would go on to out-score the Firebirds 9-1 in the final 24 minutes of play and closed the game out on a 7-0 run. Walls now has a team-high 21 goals this season and a program-best 43 goals in her three-year career.

Freshman midfielder Vanessa Valentine scored the other UDC goal – her 14th of the year, and junior goalkeeper Dani Falco stopped eight of 23 shots faced. Also, Walls and freshman attack Amy Rock each had a game-high five draw controls, and freshman defender Ashley Hidalgo scooped up a game-high five ground balls.

Queens (8-8, 2-6 ECC) was led offensively by midfielder Carly Chierico with six points on four goals and two assists. She scored on all four shots she took, collected a game-high tying five ground balls, and registered four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Fellow midfielder Lauren Gentile added four goals and an assist, and reserve Courtney Canavan pitched in three goals as well. Goalkeeper Krista Ancona stopped four of nine shots faced in a complete game victory.

The Knights out-shot UDC, 37-11, had nine fewer turnovers (22-13), and had 10 more ground balls (21-11).

UDC will play its final game on Sunday, May 1st vs. ECC foe Molloy College at 1 p.m. The game will be played at Georgetown's Cooper Field.
