Second Half Struggles Result in Lopsided Firebirds Loss vs. Alabama Huntsville

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team was defeated, 19-5 vs. non-regional foe University of Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday afternoon at Georgetown University's Cooper Field.

The Firebirds (1-5), led by two first-half goals by senior attack Amber Walls and a goal apiece by freshman midfielder Vanessa Valentine and junior defender Dominique Dotson, out-scored the Chargers 4-1 in the final 13:49 of the first half. After surrendering the first six goals of the game in the first 6:10, UDC trailed just 7-3 at halftime.

UAH (8-2) went on to score seven straight goals within the first 11 minutes of the second half as the Chargers out-scored the Firebirds 12-1 in the closing period to win by 14 goals – their largest margin of the day.

Alabama-Huntsville, a member of the Gulf South Conference and now winners of three straight games, was led by its top scorer, Nicole Federovitch. The No. 12 ranked goal scorer in Division II entered the game with 38 goals this season and added six to her total today. Also, midfielder Megan Olivia Hart registered five points on four goals and one assist.

Junior goalkeeper Dani Falco had seven saves in the loss while Haleigh Comp stopped five shots and allowed just five goals in the win.

UAH out-shot UDC 35-13,had nine fewer turnovers (21-12), doubled-up the Firebirds in ground balls (18-9), and converted 12-of-14 clears to UDC's 7-of-15. The Chargers also converted 4-of-9 free-position shots while the Firebirds were 0-for-3.

Next up, the Firebirds will visit non-regional foe Alderson-Broaddus in Philippi, WV on Saturday, March 26th.
