WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team managed two goals scored vs. the No. 9 ranked team in the nation, LIU Post, but the Firebirds were defeated 20-2 in East Coast Conference play on a rainy Friday afternoon at Woodrow Wilson HS.
Junior midfielder Amber Walls (Biology – Temple Hills, MD/Surrattsville HS) scored her team-high 14th goal of the season and freshman defender Genevieve Martinez (Fine Arts – Washington, DC/Archbishop Carroll HS) scored her first collegiate goal as the Firebirds scored on both of their two shot attempts of the day. Sophomore goalkeeper Dani Falco (Elementary Education - Middletown, NY/Valley Central HS) made 10 saves in a complete game effort.
Twelve different Pioneers scored, including a game-high four goals by Stefani Vagelatos. Emily Delaney facilitated the high-powered LIU Post offense with a game-high six assists while adding one goal of her own.
LIU Post (11-2, 6-0 ECC) dominated possession and shots as the Pioneers won 20-of-24 draw controls, more than doubled-up the Firebirds in ground balls (25-12) and took a whopping 40 shots to UDC's two. LIU Post also converted 5-of-6 clears while UDC was just 3-of-15 and the Pioneers had nine fewer turnovers (19-10).
The Pioneers raced out to a 4-0 lead in less than five minutes, and continued to score at a rapid pace throughout the entire first half as they led 15-1 at the break. They would add five more goals over a nine-minute span in the second half to take a 20-1 lead, and UDC's goal by Martinez at the 8:02 mark was the game's final goal.
Next up, UDC will visit league foe Bridgeport on Friday, April 17th at 7 p.m.
