WASHINGTON, DC – Show host Matt Rienzo visits with Director of Athletics, Patricia Thomas and the new Firebird men's and women's lacrosse coaches, Scott Urick and Melynda Zwick Brown, to discuss the historic formation of collegiate men's and women's lacrosse programs at the University of the District of Columbia in an all new Firebird Nation Sports Update.

The University of the District of Columbia announced it was adding men's and women's lacrosse in Spring of 2014 back on September 25th, 2012. Thomas explains in this FNSU episode why the school decided to add these two teams.

"Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the country on the NCAA level and on the high school level as well, and we are located in a hotbed for the sport," Thomas said. "And adding the sport was also an opportunity to address sports sponsorship by increasing the number of sports that the university sponsors, and it was part of our commitment to the East Coast Conference as well."

Melynda Zwick Brown, who was named the first ever head women's lacrosse coach at UDC on December 13th, 2012, said it was an honor to have such an opportunity.

"It's kind of a dream come true for both Scott and I to be able to start from the ground up and create something that we want and make it how we want it to be," Zwick Brown said.

Urick, who was announced the first ever head men's lacrosse coach on November 9th, 2012, echoed that sentiment as he voiced his excitement to put his stamp on the school and its athletic department.

"It's an awfully exciting opportunity," Urick said. "The traditions we start will be ours – from the get-go…and the foundation we build will be for years to come."

Rienzo will also visit with head coach Dickie Mahaffey to review the men's tennis NCAA Tournament run, recap the Women's Outdoor Track & Field season and preview their NCAA Championship participation and check in at the annual Firebird Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet.
