Offensive Struggles Result in Firebirds Loss to Panthers

GARDEN CITY, N.Y.- the University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to Adelphi University 55-69 in their second loss of the season. The Firebirds slip to 11-2 on the season while the Panthers move to 4-6.

Aiyana Ellis led the Firebirds defensive efforts, pulling a game-high 12 rebounds and four blocks. Latavia Jackson led the Firebird offense with 15 points going 7-14 from the field. Destiny Ryles posted a double-double off 11 points and 10 rebounds.

While the Firebirds made their way on the scoreboard first, the Panthers quickly took the lead with a three and went on to open the deficit. UDC struggled with their offense, shooting just 27.3% from the field, 22.2% from behind the arc and 55.6% from the foul line. Adelphi shot at 41.7% from distance, which turned out to be a game changer as the Firebirds found themselves playing catch up majority of the game.

The Firebirds best quarter came in the third as they were able to outscore the Panthers 19-16, making five steals and forcing six turnovers.

Up next UDC (11-2, 4-0 ECC) will be back in action after the break, continuing their road trip on December 30th, as they head to the University of New Haven.
