Williams Posts Double-Double to Push Firebirds Past Owls

WASHINGTON, DC- the University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team remains undefeated after defeating Southern Connecticut State University 69-58, Sunday afternoon at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex.

Tori Williams led all scorers with a career high 29 points going 12-19 from the field. She also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to post her first double-double of the season. Nia Ford was the other double figure scorer for the Firebirds with 10 points and five rebounds. Destiny Ryles posted nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Latavia Jackson and Aiyana Ellis also added eight points each.

It was a slow offensive start for the Firebirds with the visitors going on a 6-0 run and leaving the Firebirds scoreless for the opening four minutes of play. Despite being outscored 11-17 in the first quarter, UDC bounced back in the second to outscore the Owls 19-14, cutting the deficit down to just one point heading into half-time.

Ther game saw seven lead changes and three ties- the last coming at 4:42 to go in regulation, after the Owls downed a three pointer to knot the score at 57-57. After a few traded missed shots, Ellis reclaimed the lead for the Firebirds with a layup. 

With 1:57 remaining, UDC went on to open a lead going on a 10-0 run to cleam a decisive 69-58 victory over Southern Connecticut State.

UDC shot at 39.7% from the field while SCSU shot at 37.3%. The visitors had the slight edge in rebounds (39-36) but the Firebirds forced 16 turnovers while only turning the ball over six times.

Up next, UDC (6-0) opens conference play on Wedesday, traveling to N.Y. to take on Queens College.
