Valiant Effort by Firebirds not Enough in Loss to St Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, NY - The University of the District of Columbia Women's Basketball team unfortunately missed out on an East Coast Conference Playoff spot after losing 66-49 to St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday afternoon.

The Firebirds (8-20, 4-12 ECC), will be disappointed with the loss as Bridgeport sneak into the Playoff spot. However, UDC facing the No. 2 team in the conference will feel proud of their efforts.

A slow start by the Firebirds in the first quarter allowed Aquinas to open up a 21-10 lead going into the second. A slightly better second by the Firebirds was not enough to close the gap as the Spartans went 38-22 going into the latter periods of the contest.

The third period was also dominated by the Spartans, however, a strong final period saw the Firebirds show heart and determination as senior Tyra Coombs hit a three point shot to go 10 points on the day. Alexus King also put a three point shot in the final quarter to earn 13 points on the day and five rebounds. But it wasn't enough as Aquinas took a convincing 66-49 win.

The Firebirds end the season with the record (8-20, 4-12 ECC) and will see the return of 10 players in the 2020-21 season.
