Slow Start Costs Firebirds in 75-63 Loss to Roberts Wesleyan College

ROCHESTER, NY - The University of the District of Columbia Women's Basketball team was defeated 75-63; against a strong Roberts Wesleyan side in an East Coast Conference match at the Voller Athletic Center.

The Firebirds (7-18, 3-10 ECC), got off to a sluggish start in the first quarter allowing the Redhawks to capitalize by taking a 21-6 lead going into the second quarter. A better showing in the second quarter meant UDC were starting to get a grasp of the game, with junior Maya Thomas hitting back to back three point shots to provide the Firebirds with some inspiration. Thomas went on to make 22 points and eight steals in the game.

The third quarter saw UDC battle their way back into the game, and impressively reduced the scoreline to just a five point difference. A three point effort made by freshman Halia Ellis saw the score close at 47-42 to Roberts Wesleyan. Ellis would go on to make 16 points and seven assists, another solid showing by the freshman.

UDC entered the final period with the Redhawks in touching distance at 48-42. However, a winning Roberts Wesleyan looked confident and Sara Nady put 11 points on the Firebirds in the final quarter and made a game-high 28 points in the game to keep UDC at bay to end the game 75-63.

The Firebirds will face Queens College in their final home game of the season, Wednesday, February 26th at 5PM. A special ceremony will take place for our Seniors: Tyra Coombs and Sarah Hare before the game starts.
