Firebirds Lose 53-46; in Cagey Battle Against The University of Bridgeport

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia Women's Basketball team was defeated 53-46 in a tight encounter against fellow East Coast Conference team, The University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at the UDC Gymnasium.

The Firebirds (7-17, 3-9 ECC), were involved in a scrappy game with both teams searching for a victory today. UDC edged the first quarter to take a 16-15 lead into the second quarter with Danielle Harrington scoring five points along with Maya Thomas who added five points in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Firebirds defend strongly with Alexus King regaining five rebounds and allowing the Purple Knights to only nine points, UDC added to their tally by adding another 12 points.

The UDC Firebirds knew that their opponents would come out stronger in the last two periods to challenge the home side. They certainly did that as they went on to score 15 points with some strong play from Bridgeport by Kyle Felton.

With the score locked at 39-39 going into the final period, the game was anyone's to grab. UDC started the more positive with King adding a huge three point shot to make it 42-39. The home side seemed to find their flow as Hunter Rowson made a neat layup to make it 46-41 putting the visitors under pressure and adding to her tally of 10 points for the day and six rebounds.

The visiting side made their way back to even the score but a big three point shot sealed the victory for the Purple Knights ending the game 53-46.

The UDC Firebirds will be back in when they make the long trip to ECC rivals Daemen College on Friday, February 21st at 6PM.
