Jackson knocks down Career High 26 Points to Lead Firebirds to Conference Victory over the Mavericks

Washington, D.C.- Freshman guard Latavia Jackson led the Firebirds to a 66-53 victory over the Mercy Mavericks, while putting up a career high 26 points. With this win the firebirds improved 3-6 in league play to tie Queens College for 6thplace, keeping them in contention to make the playoffs. The Mavericks fell to 1-9 in league play.

Jackson garnered 11 of her 26 points from the free throw line going 11-12. She also went 3-6 from behind the arc and 6-14 from the field. Halia Ellis also put up double figure numbers for the Firebirds with 10 points, five assists and six steals. Danielle Harrington was just shy of a double-double scoring eight points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

It was a low scoring first quarter as both teams shot at only 25.0% from the field. A 7-point quarter for Ellis would help give UDC a six-point lead going into the half. Coming off the half both teams were neck for neck on the stat sheet grabbing six rebounds, four turnovers and eight personal fouls. But the firebirds would edge out the Mavericks 17-15 to keep the lead going into the last quarter with 42-34 on the scoreboard.

UDC would have their best scoring quarter of the game putting up 24 points with Jackson accounting for 12. Mia Boyd sunk 2-3 at the field to contribute four points and Desiree Gaeckler, Hunter Rowson, Harrington and Ellis combined to make up eight points to open up the gap and seal the deal with a 66-53 victory.

This win, and their non-Conference victory over Salem last week marked the Firebirds first winning streak of the season. They improved their record to 7-14 overall and 3-6 in league play to tie for sixth in the ECC with hopes of still making the playoffs.

Next up UDC will travel to N.Y. on Saturday February 8, to face off against Molloy college in hopes of avenging a 67-51 loss at home back in December. The game is slated to go off at 12:00pm.
