Slow First Half Leads to Firebirds Defeat

Washington, D.C.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks 70-54, Friday night at the UDC Gymnasium. The Firebirds were led by junior guard Maya Thomas who put up a team high 18 points.

Thomas went 7-19 from the field and 2-4 at the free throw line. Danielle Harrington went just shy of a double-double scoring nine points and grabbing a team high nine rebounds.

The Firebirds had a rough start unable to land any shots in the net which resulted in a 20-0 run for the Redhawks. A layup made by Harrington with 1:57 left to go in the first quarter put UDC on the board ending their shooting drought.

UDC was able to improve their field goal percentage in the second quarter with Latavia Jackson and Desiree Gaeckler combining to score 10 out of their 13 points. The Redhawks led the Firebirds 40-18 going into the half.

The last two quarters saw UDC outscoring Roberts Wesleyan 36-30, but it wasn't enough to cover the huge deficit made during the first two quarters of the game. In the end the Redhawks claimed victory 70-54.

Thomas made honor roll last week for her performance against Mercy College where she drained an ECC season high seven three pointers.

Next up UDC (4-12, 1-4 ECC) will host Daemen College on Sunday January 19 at the UDC Gymnasium at 1:00pm.
