Season Ends in, 84-60 Loss to St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team ended their season with a tough loss to East Coast Conference opponent St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday afternoon losing 84-60 at Aquinas Hall Gym. 

The Firebirds (4-23, 2-15 ECC) came up against an outstanding St. Thomas Aquinas team who are 9-1 in their last 10 games, and are 24-4 overall with a 16-2 record in ECC play. The District of Columbia who have been courageous all season tried to stick with the Spartans but were down at the end of the 1st 24-11. 

UDC was led by standout freshman guard Daeja Quick who contributed 15 points, two rebounds and two assists. Fine performances by freshmen Dana and Danielle Harington will boost confidence going into next year as they both missed out on double doubles with Danielle hitting nine points and nine rebounds and Dana adding 12 points, nine rebounds, and two assists. 

St. Thomas Aquinas showed why they are serious contenders for post-season play with senior guard Jenna Erickson contributing 34 points, four rebounds, four assists, and senior Adiya Henderson with a double double, adding 17 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. 

The Firebirds started the quarter with a three-pointer by sophomore guard Tyra Coombs. This kick started a tremendous comeback that put the Firebirds to within just five points at the end of the 1st half. However, the 3rd quarter swung again in the home team's favor with 3rd quarter score ending at 72-47. 

With the game out of sight, the Firebirds did what they have done so well all season and kept fighting till the end to battle with one of the ECC's top teams to outscore their opponents 13-12 in the last quarter to make the final score 84-60. 

1st year Head Coach John Nakpodia's Firebirds will be strong next season with all 11 players returning.
