Firebirds Lose 72-46 against NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team lost 72-46 to East Coast Conference competitors New York Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon at Recreation Hall.

After a difficult start, UDC (4-23, 2-15 ECC) faced an uphill battle after conceding the first two quarters. With the Bears producing some fantastic play, the Firebirds found it hard to match the East coast Conference tournament chasing NYIT and at the halfway stage, the score was 36-13.

However, a tremendous individual performance by Rookie of the Week freshman guard Daeja Quick who put up an incredible game-high 26 points, four steals, and two rebounds to help bring UDC back into the game in the last two quarters.

The District of Columbia showed better spirit in the 3rd and 4th quarters when they managed to score 33 points, although, a fierce NYIT side showed consistency in their shooting and went on to outscore the Firebirds for the win.

UDC came up against a strong Bears team, who are in the hunt for a playoff spot, yet the Firebirds saw freshman guard Danielle Harrington contribute 11 points and five rebounds, along with sophomore Tyra Coombs who had four points and eight rebounds.

NYIT Bears were in ruthless form today as graduate guard Maia Hood nearly took a double double with 18 points and nine rebounds, sophomore guard Corinn Baggs had eight points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and 2016-17 ECC 1st team senior guard Nina Vukosavljevic added seven points and nine assists to give NYIT a convincing win over the Firebirds.

The Firebird will be looking to finish the season on a high note when they visit East Coast Conference leaders St. Thomas Aquinas College, Friday, February 23rd at 1PM.
