Brave Firebirds Suffer Loss against Roberts Wesleyan 75-52

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team suffered a heavy defeat to East Coast Conference competitors Roberts Wesleyan 75-52 on Friday evening at the UDC Sports Complex.

UDC got off to a very bright start and made it difficult for their opponents to find a way in the early stages. The Firebirds (3-19, 1-11 ECC) were involved in a cagey battle with the Redhawks who were seeking their 5th straight victory. However, with some relentless shooting by the visitors, the Firebirds found it hard to control the game with the 1st half ending 37-15. The District of Columbia had a test 2nd half trying to catch Roberts Wesleyan, and the effort was led by junior guard Mia-Alexis Lloyd who managed 14 points and six rebounds.

The District of Columbia could not recover against Roberts Wesleyan who are now 10-2 in the ECC after a strong 2nd quarter by the Redhawks.   However, with some spirit the Firebirds kept showing their grit and determination. Sophomore guard Tyra Coombs was able to come away from the  with 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals and freshman guard Daeja Quick added  11 points.

Roberts Wesleyan was in tough form this evening with some sharp shooting and solid defending which was carried out by sophomore forward Emily Miller who poured in 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had three assists, and five steals. She was supported by sophomore guard Taya Andrews with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

The Firebirds will be in action at home against Daemen College Sunday, February 4th at 1pm.
