Firebirds Fall on the Road at Bowie State

BOWIE, MD – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team was defeated by Bowie State University, 100-57 on Monday night at A.C. Jordan Arena.

The Firebirds (2-6) were paced by freshman guard Daeja Quick - the reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week - who recorded her 2nd consecutive scoring effort of over 20 points, as she led all scorers with 22 points. Also, sophomore transfer guard Natalija Dubrovina, who had been shooting just 24-percent from the field on the year, got off the schneid tonight by making 5-of-12 FG, including 4-of-8 from long range to finish with a season-best 15 points.

Reserve Kyaja Williams led five Bulldogs in double-figures with 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds as Bowie State improved to 6-1 on the season.

Bowie State led wire-to-wire as the hosts held UDC scoreless for the first 8:37 of regulation and without a field goal for 9:10. The Firebirds missed their first 12 field goal attempts  of the game and went just 1-for-15 in the opening quarter to go with nine turnovers. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, shot 47-percent from the field and took a commanding, 18-6 lead at the end of the period.

UDC began to pick things up offensively in the 2nd quarter as Quick added eight points to her total and Dubrovina knocked down a pair of threes to add to her's, but UDC could not keep pace with Bowie State as the Bulldogs still outscored the Firebirds, 28-20 in the quarter and took a commanding, 46-27 lead at halftime.

Quick would score the first five points of the 2nd half on a jumper followed by a three-pointer, and that quick 5-0 burst brought UDC within 14, 46-32. That was as close as the Firebirds would get the rest of the way, however, as BSU out-scored UDC 23-7 the remainder of the quarter and extended its lead to 30, 69-39 heading into the final period.

The Bulldogs continued their ferocious attack in the 4th quarter as they went on to win by their largest margin of the night, 100-57.

Next up, UDC will return to ECC play with a visit to Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, NY on Friday night at 6 p.m.
